A ranty review, and a befuddling mystery

Reese Witherspoon, at 46, stars as the lead in a rom-com. She is one of the producers. That’s it. This is the only good thing about the latest Netflix dud.
I’ve been on a bad* movie streak lately. I want to escape into the La la land of happy endings and lovable quirks. Rom-coms, although running the risk of outraging me, often make the cut. They’re the right mix of lazy binge.
But not this one, no, no, no. You haven’t known bland if you haven’t wasted two hours of your Saturday night watching this slice of moldy bread turn, waiting for some sort of chemistry to kick in. Or for the main characters to be in the same room. They constantly talk on FaceTime as if it was 2020.
As is typical of the Netflix Cinematic Universe, the supporting cast is very interesting, always leaving us wanting more. There’s Zoe Chao playing the boujee confident millennial of our dreams, Tig Notaro — a coffee-sipping, TikTok-hating self-aware advice giver, and Steve Zahn as Zen, who might not have figured out how to keep his pants on but gives us a sorted aura.
We have Rachel Bloom sashay in for a blink-and-miss appearance, subtly cueing me towards a rerun of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend…
